New updates to Thunderbird and Lightning 1.0 now available

Mozilla released a new version of Mozilla Thunderbird, Thunderbird 8, its free and open source email application, and Lightning 1.0, the companion calendar Add-on, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Among other things, Thunderbird is available in 51 different languages and uses the same Mozilla Gecko 8 engine that is also incorporated in newly launched Firefox 8. In addition, the new version integrates Lightning 1.0, an additive that has been under development for several years and that gives Thunderbird a calendar module. In addition, hundreds of Add-ons have been updated for this latest version of Thunderbird and can be found in the Add-ons Manager gallery.

According to Rafael Ebron, “Lightning 1.0 is the fully integrated calendar Add-on for Thunderbird that lets users organize their schedules and life’s important events as a natural part of their email experience. Lightning gives users the ability to manage multiple calendars, create daily to do lists, invite friends and colleagues to events and meetings, and subscribe to publicly available calendars. With over a million active users, Lightning 1.0 is the calendar solution that users rely on to help them manage their daily lives at work and at home.”

Lightning 1.0 makes Thunderbird more attractive to those who want to leave Outlook in favor of an open source proposal to send, receive, seek and save emails. It is developed to work with Thunderbird 8, but also supports earlier versions.

What’s New in Lightning 1.0

Lightning 1.0 is the latest release of our calendar extension for Mozilla Thunderbird. The most important bugfixes in this release are:

  • Full offline support, when the “Cache” is enabled for a calendar
  • Improve diagnostics for the ICS provider
  • Fix the top startup crash. Please give Lightning another try if you previously had issues
  • Some fixes for the alarm system, specifically related to snoozing and recurring events
  • Allow opening events already accepted via invitation
